Alot of catching up to do

Having done next to nothing since November 20th, the next few weeks are destined to be very busy indeed. I have done some basic research into moulding and casting and intend to expand this research further this week. Although I hstill have typing to do from my interviews conducted back in November, I think I need a tutorial as soon as possible to clarify exactly where I am and more improtantly make sure I'm on the right track.

Aims for this week:

  • Finish typing interviews and highlight relevant points ( these points should then by put into a step by step precess 'tree' to show the production process)

  • Finish CV

  • Compile research

  • Decide on method of sculpting badge and begin to sculpt it.

Sculpting the badge

My plan for sculpting the badge was to make it using clay but when thinking about the amount of detail involved and the repetition of the design I am now thinking og making one full 'point' of the star and then replicating it by moulding and casting the others. I could then machine the circular ring in the centre. The points might be constructed from chemi wood on the mill or perhaps on the cnc machine. The letters could either be laser cut or sculpted. I would like to sculpt them to give them an indent for the colour section but I need to speak to the tutors about this to see if it would be worth it.

Creating a Mould

Having a basic understanding on moulding and casting after last year I have spoken to Julia from the workshop to tell me the most efficient way of achieving what I'm trying to do. My initial response was to make a box around the sculpt and then fill excess space with clay then pour silicon over the sculpt allowing it to thin out over all of the details. Julia said although that would work, it wasnt nessisary and suggested creating a 'jacket' of silicon over the sculpt which would be strong enough to be used for resin casting.
