23rd October

Still need to get used to updating this as I write notes each day.

Today I spoke to Will Strange regarding how to approach the brief as I really did not understand what I should be doing at this point.

After discussing my intial response (focus on exhibition modelling - purly because I like the idea of exploring scaled up models) Will put my ideas in to context of the brief:

I am free to explore Exhibition modeling but must look further into the process of design behind such a project rather than just individual models as the range is far too broad and many companies handle exhibition modelling, hardly any, if any, specialise in it.

So and a rough outline for my learning proposal would be:

  • Contact museums and or other organisations that have used or are using modelmaking companies to produce elements of their exhibition and...
  • Contact exhibition companies and that may be doing the same to and ask about the possibility of visiting them to talk about how they go about commisioning models.
  • Also ask for their assistance in coming up with a brief (either a real already used brief or new for the sake of this project) to be used to explore the design process further.

  • Once I have a good understanding of how the 'client' side of this process works move on to exploring the modelmaking side.
  • Contact MM companies who have worked in exhibition modelling about coming to visit their studio to see how they work and ask questions on the subject of design process.
  • Also see about the possibility of getting them to talk through the proposed design brief from the client asking details of how they quote for work ect (need to work up a full list of questions prior to visiting)

I have collected several contacts from websites for both museums and modelmakers and will try to establish contact in the next few days.
